 | Image Tuner - posted Saturday 07th of November 2009 06:24 PM |
For anyone who has had to resize images before, it is often a tedious task considering how simple it should be. Windows Paint can do its not much fun if you have a lot to do a lot of photos, and I feel that you should not have to shell hard earned cash for such a seemingly simple task. There are a number of applications out there but not many provide a nice degree of configurability and usability. That is where I find Image Tuner to be my pick in this class of application.

SyncToy is a file synchronisation utility for maintaining copies of you data folders in multiple folders. Most commonly used as a backup style tool to copy files from a computer to a network location or external hard drive. Once SyncToy has performed its initial sync, it will only copy files and folders that have changed, creating a much more granular file synchronisation process.

GIMP is an amazing piece of software. As far as graphics and photo editors are concerned, this one is the best of the breed in the Open-Source world. GIMP gives Photoshop a run for it's money and after using GIMP, I would say.. "Why by Photoshop?" I would say that for some users though.. GIMP may be a bit hard to use. I personally use both GIMP and Paint.Net for any creative work I must do. GIMP is more capable but sometimes the marginally easier to use interface of Paint.Net wins for simple tasks.

 | Paint.Net - posted Saturday 11th of July 2009 02:44 PM |
If anyone asks me for a graphics and photo editing program, I always tell them about this one. Paint.Net is a free Open-Source graphics editor made using the .Net (Dot Net) framework.
For a free editor this one packs a punch providing features often only available in hi-end commercial applications. For those not acustomed graphics program philosophies like Layers and Alpha channels then this may be a difficult program to use. But no more so than the commercial alternatives.

 | 7-Zip - posted Friday 10th of July 2009 10:00 AM |
This is one of the 1st tools I download and install right after setting up a new PC. Great replacement for WinZip or WinRar. It is open source and free too.
7-Zip's interface is simple and uncluttered, easy to use and does not insult the appearance of your desktop. If you use the LZMA compression algorithm which is 7-Zip's default. 7-Zip achieves an amazing compression ratio on most file types. (Make sure you set the compression level to Ultra though). Best results are achieved when there are many ... [ Read More ]... |
