Today I am pleased to release my first revision of my Windows 7 Deployment Poster. I have had many people ask me about Windows deployment and with all the different components out there involved with deploying Windows using various scenarios it was hard to visualise it all. So I decided some time back that it would be great to have a thousand foot overview poster bringing together the relationship between all the components. So after many hours of work here it is.
Although titled \"Windows ... [ Read More ]... |

Microsoft has just announced some of the feature set of the upcoming first service pack for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2. This will be the first time that Microsoft has officially spoken about the existence of Service Pack 1 (SP1) and any new functionality it may contain. Contrary to what I was previously led to believe, SP1 will contain some new functionality and not just updates. The currently acknowledged features are Hyper-V Dynamic Memory and RDP RemoteFX capabilities.

Recently there has been some discussion within various IT posts relating to a feature known as Windows 7 God Mode. After some investigation I have discovered that this feature is not specifically an unknown set of capabilities that has just been realised, but rather a way to link to many of the various configuration options already available in Windows 7. I personally would rather call this the Windows 7 God List of configuration options rather than a mode. Similar to a Super Control Panel. I must ... [ Read More ]... |

Occasionally I come across a resource that I find absolutely fantastic and must be shared. Well this is one of those resources. Windows Server 2008 R2 Feature Components Poster is the latest in a series of technical posters made by Australians Astrid and Martin McClean.
This poster provides a wonderful visual representation of some of the Windows Server 2008 R2 components. It is well designed and makes understanding some of the more complicated components seem that much easier to understand. A required ... [ Read More ]... |

Server Core only contains the necessary components to provide common Server Scenarios, such as: File Servers, Domain Controllers, Basic Static HTTP web servers (potentially PHP), etc.
Windows Server Core is confronting to the common Windows ... [ Read More ]... |

Some time ago I was searching around the internet for a good description of the Kerberos Authentication Protocol used in such technologies as Microsoft's Active Directory and Novell Netware. At the time I could not find any great diagrams or descriptions. So I created the following diagram which I have been passing to people ever since.
Kerberos gets its name from the three headed dog that guards the gates of hell in Greek mythology, Cerberos. This is because with Kerberos authentication, there ... [ Read More ]... |

Is 64-bit your future?
Today when installing a new computer operating system (OS) or purchasing a new computer you may be presented with a new choice. The choice is not with regards to the edition of the OS, be it a Home Edition or Enterprise Edition. The choice is with the underlying architecture of the OS, be it 32-bit or 64-bit. So which is it? Do you really know what it means? What effects does it have on the performance or behaviour of the operating system? Will it become ... [ Read More ]... |

Just over a month ago Microsoft released into limited beta a new product called Microsoft Security Essentials. Microsoft Security Essentials will be a free real time malware protection provided to replace the One Care package that Microsoft currently has available. Microsoft seems to have a realistic perspective on computer security and has adapted an approach that a good security product should be accessible to everyone. Because if everyone has some level of protection on their ... [ Read More ]... |
